More Minnesota Appleseeds!

Postby swamprat on Fri Jun 12, 2009 6:58 am

I just thought I'd let everybody know about the Project Appleseed shoots coming up this summer and fall.

La Crescent, MN – July 25-26 http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=7609.0

Winona, MN – September, 5-6 http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=4182.0

Over half the spots are already taken for Winona but La Crescent just went on the schedule and is wide open. Don't wait too long!

I had a great time and learned a lot at the Elk River event last month. Just signed up for Winona. Don't miss out, folks!

We are talking about doing another one in Elk RIver. But it's still in the talking stages.

I have been thinking about doing one of these and Elk River is closer then Winona. I know you are only in the talking stage but are you talking this year or next? I scored 4 value packs of Federal .22 ammo, I still need to order a set of sights and a sling for my 10/22.

If anyone is on the fence about doing one of these, I probably won't be able to get the pass for a two-day event with the baby and work and a week-long kayak trip the the Apostle Islands on the schedule, but I did put together a Marlin 795 with Tech-Sights and 4 magazines that someone could use if they need an appropriate LTR to shoot.

FWIW, anyone looking at the Tech-Sights: buy them. Buy them NOW. They are pretty much give you the exact same sight picture as a US service rifle.

Oh, and Marlin extended the rebate to the end of the year, making the rifle 130 bucks if you buy it at Gunstop instead of a big-box store. Just say'n.....

We are talking about doing another one this Fall.

I plan on hosting another one next Spring. But my life this Fall is getting more complicated by the second. I'm trying to rope another ERSC member into taking the lead for this Fall.

Let's see if Sparks can step in and help out. I'll let him know.

From what I've heard about past ones is that they were all done at short range, mostly with .22s, will the one in elk river go out farther? I'd be interested if they weren't close up and shot with .22lr.

The vast majority of the shooting is down at 25 meters with reduced size targets. You are able to use larger calibers that .22lr, but you have to come with 500-600 rounds. There's the cost and the beating you take with larger calibers to consider. That's why most people use .22lr.

If there is time, people who have qualified Rifleman are sometimes able to go shoot at longer ranges if the range is available and time permits. There is no guarantee. Last time at Elk River, there was no time.

I think another reason they use reduced size targets at 25 meters is to save time. There are a lot of rounds sent down range and the extra time required checking scores and changing targets at the longer distances would really cut down on the amount of time available for shooting and teaching. They really cram a lot of info into the two days.

Well I ordered a set of tech sights for the .22 and signed up for the AS in Winona. Reading the AS website its possible to sign up for one AS and change your reservation to another AS, So I figured I would atleast get signed up for the Winona one and if the Elk River one happens this fall maybe I will just switch. Looks like I still need a set of elbo pads, a piece of carpet, a sling and practice practice practice.

Did you install the Tech Sights? I'm thinking of ordering a set for my 10/22.

I think the Tech Sights are a really nice upgrade. I have a set on my 10/22 if you want to check them out first. Let me know.

Dean, any update on the Elk River shoots, either this fall or next spring? It'd be a heckofa lot closer than Winona (I'm in Elk River/Nowthen, so I could pedal over)

Also, I've heard of a range existing out on some trail around here, that's still standing - dunno if it's a county-owned park or some school something. One of these days I'll go try to track it down.
