bed side holsters

Postby EJSG19 on Wed Aug 19, 2009 10:32 pm

Did a search, pulled up one thread from 2 years ago, and just wondered if anyone has had any good brainstorms since then.

Safety of children has and will be considered, if and when they enter the house, so lets leave that out.

I'd like something that would hold the pistol on the side of the bed (fiance wants one on her side too now that she's got her preferred pistol). I'd like the holster to fit the pistol well enough that the grip won't bobble around if the hand doesn't grip it perfectly right away, so its stable enough to get a good grip on.

Whats the best bet? Cheap paddle holster screwed to some kind of bracket which goes between the mattress and box spring? Buy one already pre-made?

I say its better than having it on the night stand, provides a more stable way to get a correct grip on it, and it'd be under the blanket the majority of the time so its less noticeable. Anyway, its what I'm after, so if we could leave the debate whether its good or not alone, I'm just curious as to what might be the best way to get this accomplished. Figure somebody has gone down this road before me.

Thanks

if you really want to go that route i have only two words two words, call vlad, nuff said
Now on the other hand i keep mine in a safariland ALS minus the paddle in my headboard, the release mechanism on the ALS is such that if i were to grip the gun to a shooting position in a hurry, the holster flys off (with quite a lot of authority if you do it fast enough, i know i've tried it) all by itself. Alternatively like you said, go buy some fobus and find a place to affix it with whatever method you feel comfortable with to a handy nearby location.

Now for the most important question, what exactly is wrong with the 12g under the bed for home protection? a handgun is only to fight to the shotty or the rifle, and anyways dont you have a kitty who thinks its cujo, you couldnt have a better home defense than cujo

$15 option....

If the Fiancee is handy with sewing, you can and sew/hot glue a cheap nylon holster to a length of your choice of cloth, tuck the cloth under the mattress.

Cat is only worth anything if its a dog she's staring down. Anyone else is just somebody she might convince to give her some cat food, or let her get out the door.

12 ga. under the bed is fine by me, but it makes her nervous just laying under the bed, so this is a compromise. There are tools other places ready to go if need be. Not as great as a shotgun probably, but we'd have a couple .45's working in tandem, so thats better than a kick in the pants.

I'd like the holster to be mounted, rigid, to something so as to make the draw a more certain action. Don't want to draw against something that gives, and might bind as you try to clear the holster. I thought about a piece of metal, bent 90 degree's with about 18'' to go under the mattress, then 4'' vertical to attach a holster. Something like that. I'll do some looking around today, thanks for the replies everyone.

If you find it, or make it, let me know. I've been using the Fobus holster for my 65-4 through the matress strap but it's not fool proof.

I'd REALLY like something to mount my access box to.

I think the simplest would be to find somebody with a press break (can't remember for sure, but I believe thats what people use to fold sheet metal, been a while since highschool shop). Take a piece of say, 1/8'' flat sheet metal, make it about 10'' wider than your bed (5'' vertical on each side of the mattress). Maybe 3-4'' wide. Fold each 5'' on the ends vertical (up or down depending on how high you like the holster), and that would be the mounting bracket to go under the mattress. Wouldn't slide out because the other side would hold it. Could go so far as to put velcro on it so it grabs the box spring and mattress. Drill holes as required to mount whatever holster you like or pieces of wood, whatever. Even a few zip ties done correctly would probably hold it steady enough, say if you only had belt loops on the holster. Would want to round all sharp edges of course.

Probably could get the bending done with a bench vise, or by clamping a 2x4 on the bend line and doing it that way, but the crease wouldn't be nearly as nice. Also, I don't know what the price of sheet metal is these days, but I think a piece that size would run in the $5-15 range.

I don't have the tools to do it nicely unfortunately.

That probably isn't described the best, but its simple in my mind.

Yes. Also, to consider, is whether you sleep on your stomach or on your back. For me on my back, on the right of the bed, I'd like grip rearward for a draw, but on my stomach, I'd like the grip the other way for my left hand to grab it.

So it isn't a perfect idea, but at least I won't knock it off the night stand and have to fumble around on the floor for it.

I have a nylon "Uncle Mikes" "one size fits all large frame autos" nylon holster held to the side of my nightstand with 2 screws. Out of sight unless you are laying in the bed, very easy access, and very secure. no fumbling.

Ever spend 2 minutes on something and realize you have too much time on your hands? Just happened to me.

This is what I was talking about. The thicker black line would be the new-fangled metal contraption I brainstormed in all of 5 seconds. Left side fits a holster mounted one way, the right side you could mount a holster on either side of it depending which way you like your grip to be. Or better yet, mount a gun on both sides of the flange...

i just have to ask... 8-)

why couldn't he be handy with sewing...?

I can't sew worth a crap... replacing a button that's fallen off is about the extent of my sewing...

i took ag & shop in school, lol, not a single home ec class...

having said that, I've looked into these, but not purchased them yet. http://www.sshmi.com/

Mine is simply in my IWB holster between my mattress and box spring, *just* past the edge so that I can reach under and grab it.

Haha... just personal experience... I CAN sew, but it's not as pretty as when my wife does it...
