Nice to see prices actually dropping for a change!

Postby David on Sat Sep 26, 2009 5:27 pm

I was at Bill's North yesterday and was very pleased to see that some of the more absurd prices have shrunk considerably. One rifle in particular I've had my eye on went down by $250 since the last time I was there not long ago, and several others had similar reductions. Apparently this has something to do with a new policy of making prices the same or at least similar between both stores, and some changes in staff.

Now, if they're willing to lower the price of a certain Lancaster AK down to at least its MSRP, we might have one more rifle up for discussion!

Was in the Wolfs Den in Hugo this past week they had primers marked $10 something with a limit of 300. :o

The 10 something is for 300 that are taped together. He is limiting the number so all his customers have a shot. Three days, three stops, three conversations = almost a K of primers... ;)

I hope not off topic, but does anyone here frequent J&S in Lakeville? At one time I was looking a a Rock River AR-15 there, not only were their prices what I considered high, but for barrel lengths of 16" to 20", their prices went up per inch of barrel length, even though suggested retail was the same for all.

I have bought a couple guns there, probably paid more that they were worth, but the only place that had any and I wanted one.

I was there a few weeks ago - there were a couple 1911s that I might have been interested in.. until I saw the price tags -- quite high.

I honestly don't understand how J&S stays in business. Been there several times. Never made a purchase due to prices and attitude. Seems they'd much rather chat on the phone or chill with a croney.

My understanding was that J&S changed hands a few years ago. The prices were high back then when I think brothers owned it, but they seemed to at least greet you and find out what you were looking for. The last couple of times I have been in there, which has been a year or so ago, even though I am in their neighborhood a couple time a month, yes, their BS'ing on the phone seemed more important.

I think you hit it right on the head Cobb.

I've been in that shop exactly 3 times. Once when it was in the space next to where it is now. I had cash in my pocket and appropriate permits/ID, and was looking for a specific gun. They had it on the wall and I was the only one in the shop besides the two guys behind the counter. I asked twice if they would help me, they heard me but totaly ignored me and continued talking. I took the cash out of my pocket and laid it on the counter, only now did they stop talking and ask if they could help me. I swept up the cash and told them I was heading across the street to Gander Mtn (and actually found the gun there a LOT cheaper).

The 2nd time was in the new storefront. When the guy finally got off the phone with his buddy he tried to tell me that a S&W 686 was in general one of the worst revolvers ever made. I just turned and walked out.

The last time I was looking for a specific discontinued pistol. I hadn't had any luck finding it, so since I was in the neighborhood I figured I'd give them one last chance and stopped in. To my amazement they had one in stock (not the exact one I was looking for, but pretty close and appealing enough to consider). The tag was upside down, so I had to wait for the guy to get off the phone. Then I had to get his attention to get some help (I was the only one in the store). He flipped the price tag over and it was TWO TIMES the going price of that handgun! I thanked him for his time and left. I will never step foot in there again. Amazing enough, about 3 days later I found the exact handgun I was looking for, in Burnsville (from a private party) for $400 cheaper than J&S asking price!

I was in there MANY years ago. I mean like 94ish? The guy I spoke with was very condescending. Have never been back.

Regarding J&S, I would like to note that I have purchased two firearms there and found the service to be quite good and the firearms prices reasonable. Ammunition and accessory prices are high, and I too have found that the staff can get rather caught up in other conversations -- often of no obvious importance. You just have to wait them out. I prefer dealing with them than with Gander Mountain on firearms. On ammunition and accessories where you can go to GM and just get it off the shelf for yourself, that's the way to go.
