Springfield XDm

Postby phorvick on Sat Aug 02, 2008 1:57 pm

I purchased an XDm from the Carry Depot and took it out for its first shots today. Here are some initial observations:

1. the case is superb...really nice....

2. the accessories are nice (2 mags, double mag pouch/holster, decently nice paddle holster)

3, the gun is big...Glock 22 sized; assuming it is to compete in that market, then some comparisons are in order: Here are some specs...the G22 is listed first/then the XDm:

unloaded weight = 22.9 / 32
capacity = 15/16
height = 5.43 / 5.6
barrell length = 4.49 / 4.5

4. ambi mag release; striker condition indicator; loaded chamber indicator

5. trigger is much more "Glock-like" than other XD models; quicker shorter reset, crisper trigger pull; the XDm specs say about 5.5-7#, but it seemed lighter

6. very accurate (with my olde eyze I had no problems with a 1" group from 10 feet; 2" from 20 feet; from 35 yards (which for my eyes is just too hard) in a normal 2-handed grip (Isosceles stance) I could keep in the full size silhouette, but nothing to brag about.)

7. very soft shooting

8. the slide racks very easily....a very controllable gun for those that might struggle with some other guns and the strength/leverage needed to rack the silde

9. 100 rounds fired...no problems

10. interchangable backstraps (I shot with the default size)

I was struck by the ease of shooting and the accuracy. Another nice feature is that you can disassemble without pulling the trigger!

If I were in the market for an XD, I would be inclined to wait for the XDm9 or the XDm45 ...unless you wanted the XDm40.

16 rounds of .40 in an easy to shoot and accurate package, with decent accessories. Everything leads one to a purchase...IF...the size is acceptable for them. (Did I mention it is a big gun!)

Does anyone know if Springfield plans to come out with an "M" model with a thumb safety?

A manual safety, I thought it did.

There is a review by Clint Smith in the September/October issue of American Handgunner on the new XD and it is basically about the new manual safety. Now the article never refers to it as the "M" model, but isn't the "M" model the replacement for the original XD?

I think the XDM is another design, without the thumb safety.

So you think the XD has the new manual safety and it isn't offered on the XDM?

Could very well be that these are separate offerings, I really don't know. I thought that the XDM was the new XD and that the original XD design was maybe going to be retired.

It's hard to say where they are going with pistol. Maybe the thumb safety option was supposed to attract the military?

I thought that is why Smith & Wesson offered the manual safety on their M&P, but only the .45 acp.

All that work, and they've basically re-invented the 1911! ;)

For CCW it's a little too big for most. But it shoots great. But I think I'd go with an M&P with a thumb safety over a regular XD. I like the XDm more than the M&P for regular target shooting though.

Being a 1911 guy, I found the boar axis on the XD to be a bit high for me. The M&P's are pretty nice pistols, though. Fit nicely in the hand.

If they'd offer it in the XD9SC size I'd buy one. Otherwise they are pretty large for concealing, IMHO.

"evokes message board necromancy by reviving a dead thread*

Well, I bought an XDm .45ACP with the 4.5" barrel back in February 2012 (along with a Ruger Mark II 2245 so I could have the same grip and shoot less expensive ammo for practice) and everything said above by the OP is true. It's a great weapon that (pardon the pun) gives you a lot of bang for your buck. Not only do you get all the goodies that come with it, but it's really a reliable weapon that's easy to shoot and maintain. I bought 4 more high-capacity ( 13 round ) magazines to go with the 2 that come with it so I can have fun for longer periods without filling magazines all the time. (Coincidentally, I bought 4 more mags for the .22 as well, so I have 6 for each weapon), purchasing all my extra magazines at Gunstop Enterprises.

I bought both weapons at Bill's Gun Shop and it was $699.00 for the XDM and $269.00 for the Ruger Mark III 2245, both well worth the money. I've fed all types of ammo through the XDm (Remington, Winchester, MagTech, UMC) and never had a problem. I clean it after every use since I usually put 200+ rounds though it every time I shoot and I just don't like a dirty weapon at all. I have noticed that some ammo is a bit dirter than other stuff, I really like the MagTech, but it's harder to find, let alone in quantity. The XDm, definitely spits fire and smoke, but I don't mind that at all.

You probably know this, but you could get the compact size XDm. http://www.the-m-factor.com/html/home.html
