Source for peeled pine / Rustic wood.

Postby RobD on Tue Mar 09, 2010 12:16 pm

I'm going to be building a bunk bed for the kiddies, and am looking for a local source for peeled pine, or rustic wood logs. I would prefer treated wood, but don't mind terribly if it's not.

Here is the look i'm going for...

Thanks all.

Give these guys a try: http://www.rockler.com/

Otherwise a real lumberyard may be a good source. I've had good luck getting anythign I want from Hamel Lumber.

Do not use treated lumber with kids, too much heavy metal salts even in the new and improved version, non treated will last just fine indoors.

try calling some of the saw mills outstate, they will often have a source for the wood. I got some from a place near Aitkin. I will try to find their name in my files.

No sources in the metro that I know of. I work part time at a local wood shop and we have rarely seen any in the pipeline. No real demand at retail.

I have seen some people build them out of round pine fence components but finding enough length may be a challenge. These would be turned rather than stripped but it is a similar look. The joints can be a bit dicey and they can loosen up easily if the logs are not really dry when you cut the joints. You will need to be sure of cabinet grade drying (6-8%) rather than construction grade (12-15%)

We get some heavy (2") knotty pine that is rather inexpensive if you want a more basic design...You could even incorporate some natural edges into the headboard and footboard if you want to spend a few more dollars on a slab and get a one of a kind look.

I would be happy to sit down and design one with you. The shop is in Maplewood and I work Saturdays and Monday eves.

More than likely, your preferred look started out similar to the logs on the pallette. The logs in the finished product picture, to me, with the low res image, and not having seen the actual finished product in person, look artificially distressed, and finished to look "rustic".

It can be done. It might also be cheaper than buying "rustic logs"

FWIW.

You can also try lightly burning the wood with small torch or something along that line... Gives it a cool distorted effect.

its probably just me that thinks this, but I think it'd be more fun to buy "bark still on" logs, and borrow a draw knife to do it yourself.

would have to be way cheaper than buying processed logs, according to some of the prices I've seen online. A sharp draw knife would let you go through a lot of those logs in short order.

I'll take my dreamy 1700's woodworking ideas and pipe down now. I don't know where to get "bark on" logs any more than I do "bark off". Aside from harvesting them yourself, but then I'd imagine the drying process would be prohibitive.

The way the look in the picture was accomplished was to stain the wood whatever color is desired, then use a spokeshave to some parts of the stained area, leaving a raw, "sapwood" look. This will also leave a flat spot on the otherwise round log adding to the rustic look.

The next question those of you who are not wood nerds will ask ks "What the hell is a spokeshave?!?"

This is a spokeshave.

RobD: The easiest and cheapest way to get logs is buy a drawknife and cut your own logs and debark. The look you are after is easily acheived when knifing by leaving on some of the inner layer of bark. I'm doing a ceder kitchen table for myself now and it has a similar look to the bunk beds you show. Good luck.

The only problem with this is that unless the logs are treated or properly dried, you will more than likely suffer through a nightmake of splitting, warping and ill fitting joints as the logs dry.

Splitting is part of it.(imo) Yes the logs would need to be cut, shaved, and set aside to dry for a good length of time.

Good length of time being how many years in a climate/humidity controlled environment?

My anvil stump radially cracked (visible in the end grain) within a year in my shop at a rather stable 60ish degrees and 40-60% RH. It's never been below freezing since being cut either (came from my own tree).

My neighbor makes that kind of furniture and sells it and is in the Mankato area. He might have the lumber that you are looking for.

RobD, if you want to talk to my neighbor, you can get in touch with me and I can give you his info, or just call him from his web site information.

If you mention me, not a problem, but I don't think he knows who cobb is.
