12 lb kegs of powder

Postby Snakeman721 on Sat Jun 05, 2010 10:58 pm

Hey, I was just wondering if any members here near Mpls/St Paul have a 12 lb keg of powder? It can be any type, any brand, I just need to take a photo of it for a scavenger hunt I'm involved with. Thanks!

Pretty sure that's gonna be hard. It's been since the seventies when an eight pound per keg limit was installed bt the ATF

Yeah, I know...that's why the scavenger hunt person in charge picked it, he knew it would be dang near impossible to find...lol. I was just hoping there was some old timer here that maybe saved the keg after if was empty.

Ft. Snelling FTW!
This thread got me thinking about quantities (restrictions regarding storage, max numbers and weights, etc.) of powder and primers in a residential location. I could have sworn I read about such restrictions on this: https://www.revisor.mn.gov/ but I couldn't find it anywhere. Did I imagine the whole thing? THought there was something about 8 lbs. or less, and if more had to be in a wooden crate with inch-thick sides? Does this sound familiar?
I got nothin'

Then there may well be more stringent state regulations like in MN then as suggested NFPA Guidelines which most states adopt.

SAAMI regs are published in most handloading data books. They came up with the 8 pound limit for DOT acceptance of smokeless powder in everyday shipping.

Is that 10,000 total primers, or 10,000 of each size 8-)

I might need to have a quick garage sale or make some ammo.

I can think of at several stores that violate the primer and powder limits on display.

I'll check my cabinet to see how far over the limit I may be for primers and powder.

Storage in a residence:

Primer limit is 10,000. Powder limit is 20 pounds stored in 1 pound containers. 20 to 50 pounds stored in wooden box or cabinet with walls at least 1 inch thick.

I have never heard of this being enforced or checked. Does anyone else?

Oh yeah, firemarshal's check all the time in larger stores. Also, IF the place is sprinkled, the display limit is higher, or they display empty bottles.

Thanks, but that won't work. It needs to be LABELED as "12lbs". Basically, they want a photo of a keg before the BAFT rule change. Thanks for the help guys!

I've got an old 10lb keg. Looks like the one Ttousi posted above. Problem is, somebody put white stickers all over it so you can't read the label unless you want to spend a long time peeling them off. You can sort of see through them.
