Lets see your SBRs

Postby timwarner on Sat Nov 06, 2010 11:31 am

I've been rolling over the idea for an SBR.
I need inspiration and, need to know what I have to do.
But, inspiration first. I keep thinking about a super short AR. maybe 7.5"

Just out of curiosity, what is the attraction? People seem to get all excited about these things and I can't figure out why.

I'm not at home. I am at work, as I am every Saturday. Keeps me out of suspicious sexy parties.

Question away. That doesn't do a whole lot for me.

I can see SBR as neat/useful in the proper context.

Originality
16" p90 --> original p90

Ballistics:
16" pistol caliber carbine---> ballistic optimized pistol caliber carbine.

If you have a SBR good for you, I just find it really wasteful giving the ATF $200 so you can get rid of a bit of barrel. That $200 could be spend on a lot of other cool stuff instead of a tax stamp. On the other side of things I wonder if those who pay for machine guns, etc, would fight against legislation permitting regular citizens to buy them tax free since they have thousands if not millions invested in overpriced inflated firearms. Kinda like those who had "pre-ban" rifles/mags during the AWB but on a much more inflated scale.

Doubt you'll see the NRA suing the ATF about taxing firearms.

Rifled barrel. 125 grains ~1400 fps. .357"diameter holes. No tax stamp. No proctological exam. Fits in IWB holster.

Rifled barrel. 60 grains ~1600fps. .223" diameter holes. $200 Tax stamp. ATF exam. Doesn't fit in IWB holster. Really cool.

Actually not quite....

It's chambered in 7.62x39...... so it's a 124 grain bullet going 1750 fps.......

I actually shortened this guy myself... It was a bit of a project....it's not really store bought like your m&p, as some of my blood and sweat went into building it.

The paper work is actually pretty darn easy, 20 minutes and you are done... a little longer if you don't have a trust. It's the 4 month wait to get paper work back that kills you.

There is quite a bit more to this gun than the gee wiz factor, It handles very well, and is actually one of my most accurate ak's (thanks to the re crowning), but if you guys are bound and determined to poop all over my build, by all means.

Falcon, I can think of much greater wastes of 200 bucks than a tax stamp..... I have a rifle that is uniquely mine... accurate, incredibly handy, and relatively powerful for it's small size. The smiles it's brought to peoples faces when I hand them a 30 rounder and tell them to let it rip at shoots, has been worth at least 200 bucks to me.

I agree with the sentiment above, I'd be the first to advocate total abandonment of nfa rules... I mean then I could drill a third axis pin in my baby, and really have some fun!

It's not the tax that has driven the prices through the roof. It's the closed registry. A finite supply coinciding with wealthy baby boomers was very volatile for pricing. Those buyers all take the risk that the registry will be re-opened or that fed gov will pass laws banning ownership, or banning resale. If any of those things happen, their investments are toast. Exactly like the pre-AWB stuff (unless you're in NY or a couple other states). Don't be hating folks who had the money or foresight to buy these guns. Use that energy to get modern class 3 weapons and suppressors legalized in MN.

Would that even be possible? I'd love to have a suppressor but my understanding is the DNR is worried people will poach deer.

ok, I wanted pics/info on people's SBRs, not a <edited word> discussion on whether or not it makes sense or is a good idea.

Thanks bessy, how does the shorty AK handle? I've never shot one.
