I doubt it's irrelevant if you're driving a motor vehicle... but maybe you want to be a test case like Joel?

Open carry in a motor vehicle in Wisconsin is not legal, it must be unloaded & cased as in the post above. I use the cabled lock box with gun & ammo in the same box.

Yeah, that's one of two major flaws with the Wisconsin Open Carry law. You can't have a loaded gun with you in the car, so carjacking is still a "safe crime" to commit in Wisconsin. Secondly, you cannot Open Carry in any establishment in wisconsin that serves liquor on the premises, which disqualifies about 25% of all buildings in Wisconsin. (hic!!) Seeing as I have been stopped by the police TWICE in my entire life, i don't really worry about it when I go from Afton over to Hudson.

Another important precaution for open carry in WI is the maintaining of a 1000 ft buffer from any school zone unless you are on private property. Depending on street block length, you could be a couple of blocks from a school and walking down the sidewalk and be in violation if you are not aware a school is there.

I stop in Duluth at the bridge. Go to the back of the vehicle, open the tailgate, remove my Glock 30 from its holster (making sure to do it slowly for the benefit of all the other cars passing by), unload it and then store it in a locked gun case bolted to the floor board of my vehicle.

Then I make the approx. 2 hr. trip through Wisconsin to the U.P. Once in Michigan, I again pull over, remove my Glock from the safe, load it and holster it. I then continue my drive to Crystal Falls where I like to hunt.

i just pull over at the "welcome to WI" sign and throw 'er in the trunk. comes out as soon as i see the minne-zo-tah sign on the way back in. but then again, i'm on;y accross the river when i'm deer huntin so i still get to run around with a big boom stick. works out well

I wouldn't assume that's not in Minnesota too. One of the few things I know firsthand about snowmobiling is that it's a lot like dancing: once you've had a few drinks you think you're good at it.

The firearm must be fully encased. Ammo doesn't have to be stored separately. Magazine can be loaded in the case, just not in the firearm.

My understanding of the law as well. It's really poorly drafted, but that's the way it goes. It is my understanding that there is no requirement to have a lock on the case, but if you leave your car unattended for any length of time, you run the risk of someone breaking in and stealing your gun.

I normally concealed carry my Springfield XD. The case it came in is made of plastic with snap latches on it. I keep that in my car for when I go into WI for work or shopping. Just before the border, I stop, pop the mag, clear the chamber, and put the bullet, mag, and pistol in the case. I latch it shut and put it under the back seat of my truck. When I get to my office (I'm self-employed), I carry the XD box inside and keep my office door locked at all times to keep the weapon secure. If I have to stay late at the office and it's time to leave, I open carry the gun on my way to the parking lot. Once I get to my car and I'm convinced that no one is around posing a potential threat, I unload/case the pistol before I get in.

Generally, if I'm out running errands, I don't like to open carry, so when I leave my truck parked for an extended period of time, I transfer everything to one of the lock boxes mentioned above.

I really can't wait until next year when WI allows concealed carry in whatever form.

I have one of the COM lock boxes ('safe' is too strong a word IMHO), with its cable around the seat support, under the front seat for those occasions. Like they show here.

But I guess I don't really know for sure if Wisconsin would want you to have the ammo separate. If so I'm a criminal.

That safe is one of those (keeps the honest guys out) safes. 21 gage is only a step above pop can.
