HF161

Got this forwarded from a friend:

From: Minnesota Gun Rights Activism <activism@twincitiescarry.com>
Date: Wed, Jan 26, 2011 at 9:56 AM
Subject: Please call your Minnesota House Representative NOW

Sorry for the lateness of this; I only heard about this hours ago.

In about fifteen minutes, Tony Cornish's committee is meeting to hear the "delete all" amendment to HR 161. I'm just outside the hearing room right now.

It's a good bill, and a great amendment. Trust me, please.

What it would do is get rid of all of the duplicative, expensive, and unnecessary state background checks for gun purchases, making it unnecessary to go down to your local PD every year and get a "purchase permit." Whatever value background checks have -- I'm skeptical, but . . . -- would remain: Federal law requires a NICS check, and that wouldn't change.

What would change? The State of Minnesota would no longer be wasting huge piles of money every year, duplicating the Federal checks. In this time of tight budgets, why waste money on things that the Feds are going to do anyway?

That question answers itself.

So: please call your Minnesota House Reps, please, and tell them that you want HF 161 pass . . .

. . . and, if you would, tell 'em Joel sent you. Email them, too, please, and CC me at joelr@twincitiescarry.com .

I don't often ask you to pick up the phones and send out emails, but I'm asking now.

Please.

More soon.

Joel Rosenberg,

Activism List Administrator

I have nothing further to add, as I know nothing about the subject. This is all FYI.

there's also an author's amendment to DELETE the PTP entirely which I think is the way togo and which I was calling all the members of the committee and saying since early this morning.

It's redundant.

The only nice thing about ptp... is it give the average joe blow a way to say... "hey I've had a background check" when you are buying or selling privately, buy I agree... it's a waste of money.

I really think Tony Cornish is "one of the good guys". And for ME to say that about ANY politician is really something. He was my state rep when I lived in Lake Crystal a few years back, but I moved and now am represented by Gomer Pyle. Some chick. I dunno.

The Strib is on it:

In a show of new Republican strength at the State Capitol, a House panel Wednesday voted to repeal Minnesota’s gun permit requirement, saying it unnecessarily duplicated federal laws

and

But Rep. Tony Cornish, R-Good Thunder, the panel’s chair who showed up at the meeting carrying a briefcase that featured a large sticker that said “Crime Control Not Gun Control”, promised before the 90-minute meeting began that he had the votes to pass the initiative.

I just finished reading some of the comments from the blog. It's truly amazing how far some folks can insert their head up their rectum. I wonder if they would feel the same way if we were talking about smartphone control or vehicle control. I'd be willing to bet that more people are killed annually because of inattentive driving or speeding then guns.
