Input needed

If this topic has been beaten to death, I apologize. I am looking to purchase a compact 40.

I have narrowed my search to the following 2:

XDM 40 compact

Glock 23

Hoping to get some unbiased input, if that is possible. I am basically looking for some pros and cons, and any concerns that I should be aware of.

I would really like to have a chance to shoot them before I make the purchase. Any insight as to where a guy can do that?

You can try them at Bills Gun Shop and Range in Circle Pines and Robbinsdale. Both stores should have them both on hand to rent. Good luck in your choice. Make sure to keep your rental receipt and they will give you the cost of one of the rentals off the purchase of a new gun. And I think they are still giving out a range pass for two with a new gun as well.

If I'm wrong I'm sure I will be corrected.

I have owned and carried both of these pistols. (not that it means too much)

I like the XD 40 compact 's factory sights and general fit to my hand.
The magazine finger rest tended to pinch my skin and wiggle in the mag well when shooting. Had no performance issues with the pistol.

I do not like the factory sights that came with my Glock 23. Replaced them with 3 dot night sights. For some reason the Glock 23 is the most accurate carry pistol that I own. I just shoot the Glock better....don't know why. The Glock has also never had a mechanical issue.


They are both good, however I agree that you need to try them out yourself.

This is basically an argument between French Vanilla Ice Cream and New York Vanilla. You will have to shoot them to figure out which one you like the best. The XDM provides some nice features, and many have commented that the grip is much more comfortable. However, since the Gen4 Glocks have come out, there has been a drastic increase in peoples' approval of the grip on the Glocks. The real major difference comes down to trigger pull and the action. Glocks are double action, and XD/XDMs are single action. They don't feel too different from each other, but for some people it could make a difference. The double action makes a bigger difference for law enforcement than it does the typical shooter.

This knuckle issue is common with lots of holster draws. I wrap a piece of medical tape around my middle finger, and it solves the problem. It will last all day, too.

I can vouch for Chet, he's a good guy. I brought him here hoping someone had both of these and might meet up to let him try them out? Rentals on guns and overpriced range ammo suck. I am guessing he will pay range fee and provide his own ammo (maybe a Federal product of the HP variety ). If he decides on the Block, I have informed him about the GSSF.

All that said, I have neither, as I prefer plastic in porn stars, not firearms. And apparently he's too good for a CZ, Witness, or a S&W 686.

The Glock is the standard that most of the others have been trying to beat.

When the XD came out Glock haters thought of it as the second coming. My opinion is the trigger just plan sucks, and a good trigger job is not cheap.

Next came the M&P, it put the hurt on XD sales big time. The trigger is alot better and it is fair alternative to the Glock. It had some nice features like changable backstraps.

Glock has adapted some of those items into there next generations. So if I were ranking them it would be Glock, M&P and the the XD. And before anyone pegs for a a Glock lover, yes I own one a 27, but on the other hand i own 2 Springfields, just not XDs.

To the OP, are you referring to the brand-spankin' new XDm Compact? If so, I have the XDm-9 Compact and love the damn thing. It combines the best of the XD Subcompact with the XDm platform. I like the short grip and longer barrel (I added a modified Pearce pinky extension for comfort).

Interestingly enough, I often hear the opposite about the XD and M&P triggers. A lot of people that I talk to don't like the M&P triggers, but find the XD/XDMs fine. Of course, I love the Glock trigger, and some people think I'm goofy.

Bottom Line:

Try both. Either go to bills, or meet up with one of the dozens of forum members that have them, and try.

We cannot tell you what gun will work best for you. That requires your expert opinion.

Just curious how you narrowed your search to those 2 without trying them yet. Have you considered the M&P? Not to say they are poor choices, just wondering what your criteria are.
