I hate to be this guy... XD Tactical vs M&P pro series (9mm)

Postby Cadet on Thu Mar 31, 2011 6:05 pm

Im buying a gun to use for USPSA this summer at the shooters show this weekend and was wondering if anyone had any experience with either of these guns, they are both 5 inch models and both good guns. Went last weekend and held them both, I didnt like the XD grip safetys feel alot but other than that didnt have too much of an opinion. Im open to glocks but prefer items made in america.

Most Glocks are assembled in the USA now. I think the XD is made in Croatia.

XD's are made in Croatia, but I love mine (XDM).

I was misinformed on the XD then, I apologize.

I have both the M&P Pro 9 and Pro 40. I was a traditional 1911 shooter for 20 yrs. Glock and Springfield XD just didn't feel right when shooting. I have done trigger work on both models and shoot both USPSA (production, limited 10) and IDPA (SSP, ESP). They are very comfortable and function flawlessly.

Some of the top guys in Production use a CZ SP-01 ... I'd guess the money's about the same ... might wanna at least try one, at the show ... it's free. Image

Otherwise, I've never owned an XD, but I've shot a few ... I thought the pre-M's were good ... when they introduced the XDM's, sayin' the triggers were somethin' special, I couldn't believe it ... they were worse than before. Everyone I know who shoots an XDM either had the trigger replaced, or wants to.

I had an M&P ... very nice gun ... but it wouldn't shoot to the sights ... prefer my sights centered ... call it a 1911 thing ... I got rid of it ... ain't got 'round to tryin' 'nother one.

I've had a dozen+ Glocks ... they all shot to the sights ... with the 3.5 lbs connector, the triggers weren't unbearable. Over the years, my grip's changed, and now I need a floor-protector on the back, to keep my hand from gittin' ripped up ... can't git that neat beavertail thing, 'cause it's a large-frame ... small-frames hit my middle-finger knuckle jest right ... can't grip 'em at all.

If ya can get past the looks, the new Walther PPQ might be werth a look.

HK P30 looks/sounds good. I had a USP years ago ... nice gun ... expensive mags.

Sig P226, 'course ... but it's hard to justify the cost, compared to a CZ/EAA (ditto HK, I reckon)

Really too bad, if ya've never been to a match 'fore ... seein' some of these guys handle some of these guns, tends to make ya want whatever it is, they're shootin'. Image

These guns are all too similar for having someone else pick them for you. Go with what you feel comfortable holding. You know what a Glock enthusiast, Springfield enthusiast, S&W enthusiast is going to say about these?

Personally, I have own(ed)/fired these basic composite pistols. Sure the Glock grip angle is different. What is with the grip safety....do I need more safety? What is with these fat soft grips? Why is it cutting into my hand after shooting 500 rounds today.

If you can shoot all of them, try them all out. They are available and if you are only buying one, why not spend some money at renting it. If we were best friends, and I had a ton of time, I would let you try them all.......full size to sub compact. I am sure there are other people that own all these like I do.

I could praise....nitpick all the popular firearms from experience. But other peoples' opinions don't mean $#!* when it isn't for you.

yeah I wasnt asking for someone to tell me what to buy, just experiences people had had with the guns to help me make an informed purchase.
Id be putting a https://apextactical.com/store/product- ... pid36.html (trigger kit) on the M&P. I also have small hands, which I failed to mention, so something like the M&Ps rounded removable backstrap system is pretty attractive.
thanks for all the input.

Buddy of mine just bought an M&P in .45. He loves it, and I've shot it quite a bit. Does need a trigger job and he will be purchasing the apex kit however the removable back straps on the M&P are awesome. I think he's on the medium but you get 3 to choose from. I know this isn't your caliber but I would suspect the 9mm version is on par with this. This gun was purchased mid Feb, 2011.

One failure to extract, on the first mag on the first time shooting it. Mags were pretty stiff and it chambered one then the 2nd round blocked the brass from ejecting however he now has something like 600 rds through it and the trigger is a bit less gritty but has never malfunctioned since that first mag.

I also have a Sig P226 in 9mm. I love that gun. Probably 3000+ rds through it. Never misses a beat. Purchased mid 2008.

Also shot an XD in 9mm. Really nice gun too but I don't like the grips as much but this is a personal prefrence. Don't buy a gun based off of someone's grip prefrence.

With small hands, these adjustable grips really are the way to go. I love my USP, but it has felt always a little off. I really benefit from adjustable grips in these guns. HK45 (not compact), P30, M&P with small grips have been great for me. It makes a world of difference. However, I don't think XDm grips feel that different either.

I have both and the trigger adjustment that Ryan the gunsmith at Bill's in robbinsdale did on the M&P was very nice ....my GF has adopted that gun as one of her uspsa guns for this year
