The fact the guns are UNLOADED meets the legal requirement.
Now, onto how the unloaded guns should be stored .....
I generally have 2 types of guns: Self Defense and Other. The Self Defense gun is either on my person or loaded and locked in an access safe. The rest ... Unloaded, locked in safe, ammo separate. I've locked the bolt from my rifles in my handgun safe before but it's a bit of overkill. Still did it.
But we also attempt to gun proof our kids. That will depend on the kid. My 7 Year Old could quote Eddie Eagle at 5. My 4 Year Old may not get there until later. It's a personality and impulse control thing. We also didn't make the Eddie Eagle steps JUST about guns. EVERY danger, we used the mantra: STOP! DON'T Touch! LEAVE the area! TELL an Adult! TAKE your Brother!

a Knife left on the counter? See the steps. The car left running in the driveway? A nosy Stranger? The Grill? Kids playing too close to the Fire?
