If anything it's more important. Kid proofing your guns protects your kids from YOUR guns.

Gun proofing your kids helps to protect them from "found gun" accidents in general.

How about just a lockable hard-sided case?

The fact the guns are UNLOADED meets the legal requirement.

Now, onto how the unloaded guns should be stored .....

I generally have 2 types of guns: Self Defense and Other. The Self Defense gun is either on my person or loaded and locked in an access safe. The rest ... Unloaded, locked in safe, ammo separate. I've locked the bolt from my rifles in my handgun safe before but it's a bit of overkill. Still did it.

But we also attempt to gun proof our kids. That will depend on the kid. My 7 Year Old could quote Eddie Eagle at 5. My 4 Year Old may not get there until later. It's a personality and impulse control thing. We also didn't make the Eddie Eagle steps JUST about guns. EVERY danger, we used the mantra: STOP! DON'T Touch! LEAVE the area! TELL an Adult! TAKE your Brother! :-) a Knife left on the counter? See the steps. The car left running in the driveway? A nosy Stranger? The Grill? Kids playing too close to the Fire?

Or replace all the firing pins with ones that are too short to strike the primer, I think I saw that in a movie once...

I try to teach my kids and Grandkids that if they see a gun, to simply not touch it, because it is ALWAYS loaded, or they should believe that it is. Hopefully that way they'll be safe at my home, AND another home also. ;)
