OGC USPSA Thursday Nites '12 + Orientation + AR's

Postby rugersol on Thu Apr 05, 2012 12:57 pm

In years past, we've welcomed new shooters to show up early (4:00) to nightly matches for a brief orientation, prior to the match.

In addition to this, last year, we scheduled an additional Thursday prior to the start of the summer league, at which, we had a longer orientation, and set up two courses for "practice". The response was overwhelmingly positive. So, we intend to do the same again, this May.

As last year, we strongly encourage experienced shooters to show up as well! We still need RO's for the "practice". As well, USPSA rules allow us to use non-NROI-certified RO's for our nightly matches ... which is a very good thing, otherwise we'd have no one to RO, and no matches. Ideally, those interested in RO'ing have shot USPSA for at least a year or two. There's no commitment to showing up to this. Every year, we lose RO's. Every year, we need new RO's to step up. If you've been shooting for 2yr+, and you've never RO'd, you're not keeping up your end of the deal. Moreover, there's not a single good reason to not RO. It's either that, or paste targets, reset steel, reset activators, score, or set on yer ***. On a good squad, ya've got at least 3 - 4 RO's, so each one only runs a few shooters. If no new RO's step up, we get down to 1 ... sometimes, zero.

If you're the least bit interested, show up for our orientation nite, and I'll do an RO class. Better that nite, than during a match. ;) Ya'll get no NROI certification ... that's gotta come from an actual NROI Range Master (the official course, ya sometimes see posted over the winter). However, if ya've recently taken the official class, I'd advise showing up anyhow ... as a refresher. At the very least, it takes about 20 shooters 'til ya get the range commands right. Image I'll do the RO class while Tim does the new shooter class. Then we'll put the two together and shoot. Regardless, we'd appreciate at least a couple experienced RO's show up, anyhow.

The orientation nite will be Thursday, May 3rd ... no later than 5:00! Normally, match fees are $15 ... however, for the orientation nite, EVERYONE is expected to help set-up and tear-down ... no shooting-thru ... no squad-hopping ... no leaving early ... moreover, without a classifier, and as we won't otherwise send the match to HQ, we have no USPSA fees for this one ... so we'll ask for $5/ea from EVERYONE, for the orientation. RO's, that means you can shoot, too!

The first match of '12 will be the following Thursday, May 10th. However, this match will also NOT be sent in to USPSA ... and EVERYONE again will be expected to help set-up and tear-down. At which, this match will also only be $5. We will also NOT be scoring this match. Targets will be 15yd - 100yd. In addition to 9mm, .40, and .45 pistols, for this match only, we will also allow .223 pistols (and such). If you don't have a .223 pistol, a "rifle" will suffice. These courses will have mandatory reloads, so ya can leave the SureFire and the Beta at home. Image

As the May 10th match will employ all the USPSA safety rules, and with not enough daylight to do a pre-match orientation, attendance in the May 3rd orientation is mandatory, for the May 10th match (current USPSA members with a "C" or better classification, not withstanding).

May 17th will kick-off the regular matches, for league score. For those unfamiliar, you needn't show up for EVERY week (unlike many other less formal leagues). Fees are $15/match (with $5 discounts to help set-up/tear-down). For more info, see http://ipsc.krok.us/ ... I'll update the calendar, later. :|

Tim has indicated he's interested in not running matches next year. :?

When Tim took over OGC, IIRC, he was only in his 2nd year of USPSA. I was about the same, when I took over my first club (Armored Fire). At which, I'll suggest absolutely anyone with a year 'er two of USPSA under their belt, a current member of OGC, and preferably someone who can get out to OGC early on Thursday evenings, contact me. Ideally, someone who's interested will work closely with Tim and myself this whole summer, so they're best prepared for next year. Ultimately, we simply need someone to draw up courses every week, and make sure the shed's stocked ... there's otherwise lots of folks very willing to help with many other tasks. This also counts for your work hours at OGC. Tim and I have dozens of courses already drawn up ... many have been recycled for years ... if you really wanted, you'd never hafta draw another course. 8-)

Thank you! I've been wanting to try USPSA so this sounds like the perfect opportunity. Now to find a holster and something to hold mags....

Presumably OGC is Oakdale?

Is there any league closer to the southwest suburbs? I plan to shoot some of the steel shoots at Hutch, but am interested in a weekly league.

Thanks.

I got my ass out to Oakdale several times last year and it was a new experience and lot of fun.

Thanks to all the volunteers.

Minor Technical question:

Can I use a shoulder holster?

Nope. Strong-side hip only. The shoulder holster causes an unsafe muzzle direction.

Pine Island runs weekly USPSA and Faribault IDPA, but I don't know how southwest these really are. Mostly just south.

MAPSA is also running it's weekend matches down in pine island. Second Saturday of each month.
I know PIPS also does weekend matches (Pine Island's local club of uspsa yahoos)...

If you can't make it to the fine match that OGC puts on each week that is... or if you were looking for extra matches to attend.

Sounds like a good time. Someday I might have to make one of these. I suppose I could always watch.

No can watch. Like Ruger said, bring a gun. And ammo.
Trust me, you'll understand when you are done.

Faribault runs USPSA on Tuesday nights and IDPA on Wednesday nights starting mid-May. The range is located NW of Faribault, East of Kilkenny, South of Shieldsville. We have many shooters from the south Metro.

I have the events on the MNGunTalk "Calendar".

USPSA membership is not mandatory.
May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?
