You are absolutely CORRECT, however to be clear - was it a JAM or a Malfunction? Malfunctions can be cleared a Jam goes to the Gunsmith
I however, consider a Shotgun to be the best choice for my personal and home defense situation, I know how to use a Shotgun quite well and am a lot more comfortable with it over just about anything else.
The object of the exercise, at least for me is to make someone STOP what they are doing RIGHT NOW - there is just no Argument with a 12ga. I tend to stay away from Semi Auto Rifles and I spent an awful lot of time with them - the only "Battle Rifle" I would consider owning is a Tavor X95....
No mroe Ar15's for me. I consider them to be Marginal at best for my purposes and once bitten twice shy. I am not a big fan of Gas Tranfer Guns.
It did go into a smith and I do not beleive it was due to poor maintenance as it was always broken down and cleaned thoroughly after every use and it was quite a few years ago so I do not recall completely what was the issue, however if I recall correctly it "locked up" after the last shot and try as we all could no-ine in the group could get the action to open up and eject the spent shell. It went into the smith and worked flawlessly for many many rounds after that.
I get your point and do not disagree. Happen to have 2 870's myself. I guess my smart-rear comment was more directed at the legend of the 870 as God's gift to the shotgun world and while it is undeniably a very reliable and proven system, even it is not infalable. Just like to be a crumudgen now and then.
As you stated a pump shotgun is often the best choice for home defense and has been my go to for this purpose many times.
