MINNETONKA -- A Minnetonka gun shop on Excelsior and Co. Rd. 4 was burglarized early Monday morning and dozens of weapons are now missing.
Burglars stole several different kinds of handguns, and police are now on edge.
Police say the burglars knew what they were doing and exactly what they wanted. They hit the Glen Lake Gun Shop around dawn, hours before employees arrived, and disarmed the store’s sophisticated security system.
The thieves left behind shards of shattered glass after they smashed and grabbed four cases full of guns. The total stock of what’s missing came to 30 handguns, including .22s, .38s, .45s and Glock’s.
Three years ago, 70 guns were stolen at a store in Richfield. In the following months, guns turned up at a high school, on a school bus, another was used to shoot at a police officer, and others have been used in violent crimes. Of the 70 firearms stolen three years ago, only a fraction has been recovered.
“Guns in the wrong hands don't belong with those individuals. There are so so many circumstances and scenarios that can take place,” says Matt Mahoney, a concerned citizen customer of the gun shop.
