MINNETONKA -- A Minnetonka gun shop on Excelsior and Co. Rd. 4 was burglarized early Monday morning and dozens of weapons are now missing.

Burglars stole several different kinds of handguns, and police are now on edge.

Police say the burglars knew what they were doing and exactly what they wanted. They hit the Glen Lake Gun Shop around dawn, hours before employees arrived, and disarmed the store’s sophisticated security system.

The thieves left behind shards of shattered glass after they smashed and grabbed four cases full of guns. The total stock of what’s missing came to 30 handguns, including .22s, .38s, .45s and Glock’s.

Three years ago, 70 guns were stolen at a store in Richfield. In the following months, guns turned up at a high school, on a school bus, another was used to shoot at a police officer, and others have been used in violent crimes. Of the 70 firearms stolen three years ago, only a fraction has been recovered.

“Guns in the wrong hands don't belong with those individuals. There are so so many circumstances and scenarios that can take place,” says Matt Mahoney, a concerned citizen customer of the gun shop.

Does the story really have "Glock's," with an apostrophe? If so, I have really lost all hope in our education system.

I'm surprised they (at least as far as reported) didn't take any long guns. I seem to recall seeing at least a couple of the scary black rifles there.

Might have just been easier to smash glass than take the time to cut a cable/lock.

How many can you carry?

I figure 2 guys with 2 pillowcases each can take 30 handguns, while they could only get a couple long guns each. Long guns aren't as easy to sell on the street either.

That sucks. I go to Gunstop for most of my needs and refer other people there as well. I hope they catch whoever did this, although I doubt that outcome is very likely.

A bit more info appeared in the local paper.

http://mnsun.com/articles/2008/07/18/br ... 17guns.txt

Burglars stole about 30 guns from a Minnetonka gun store in the early-morning hours of Monday, July 14 after a first attempt to break into the store failed hours earlier.

Minnetonka Police Chief Mark Raquet said it's alarming to think the guns are now in the hands of criminals.

"There are X amount of guns out there on the street," he said. "That is not a good thing."
The burglary took place between 5:15 and 6:15 a.m. at Gunstop, located at 14410 Excelsior Blvd. in Minnetonka, police reported.

The burglars tried unsuccessfully to break into the store at about 3:30 a.m., when police say the store's alarm first sounded. When officers arrived four to five minutes later, it appeared that burglars attempted to pry a back door open, but didn't get in.

"Nothing was disturbed, nothing was taken," Raquet said.

Officers were on the scene investigating until 5:15 a.m.

Raquet said his officers checked surrounding areas, but found nothing. After police and the store's key holder left the store, burglars returned and gained entry through the back door before the store's first employee arrived at 6:15 a.m. The store's alarm system was not working properly after the first burglary attempt.

The key holder "was unable to get the alarm system running again," Raquet said.

The burglars had just one hour between police leaving the scene and the first employee to arrive to go back to the store and commit the crime. Raquet said it's a sign that the burglars might have been watching the store while police were there.

"Logic would tell you that they were watching us," Raquet said.

Raquet said he didn't know specifically what types of guns were stolen, but estimated the total number to be about 30. He said the store has a video-surveillance system. Police will examine the video from last night for clues.

Minnetonka Police called in the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to assist with the investigation.

Minnetonka Police are seeking to interview anyone who saw suspicious activity at the store between 5:15 and 6:15 a.m. on Monday.

"We would certainly welcome any information," Raquet said. "We need to try and resolve this case."

If you have information, you can call Minnetonka Police at 952-939-8500 or call the confidential tip line at 952-935-8000.

Frick. Tough luck. Hanging around until 6:15 would have prevented it completely.
