I have learned that I need to make the jump into reloading. So, primers, powder, and projectiles.

Ammunition.

I might pick up a few magazines for my XD, but that's because 7 mags isn't quite enough if one of them breaks.

I might also get around to buying a few spare mags for my Mosquito, so it's not lonely with a single magazine (I know, I'm a bad bad mosquito owner  )

But mostly, ammunition.

That's the question I was going to post.

Many seem to think that on the vernal equinox, or some such magical moment, all the 'hoarders' will go away, and those wishing to stockpile will see prices back at 30-50% of todays market.
It's not rational to plan for all those crazy hoarders trying to buy 3 ARs, and 5000 rds of 223 to go away so prices will drop for you to buy ...3 ARs and 5000 rds of 223 .
This may well be the normal, or it could get worse.

When some of the world's biggest distributers start rationing, and with the insurance and banking industries turn tail on the firearms industry, things will be different, regardless of how the lawmakers act, or not.

The reason I think an "after" is possible....

Eventually, there will be a deciding point of whether or not the ban passes. If it passes, then the "after" exists, just with restricted rights. The ammunition market will eventually level out - no guns to use the ammunition are selling, and while there are quite a few out in circulation that are "grandfathered" eventually the demand will die down as people aren't buying up the rifles. Credit cards will catch up with the hoarders, grinding them to a halt. Supply will catch up eventually.

If it doesn't pass, then the hoarders run out of credit and the rest of us let things normalize out because, after all, there's no rush. We can still legally buy what we want when we want.

Seems to me that either way, those crazy hoarders will end up stopped at some point, and that will let the rest of us get what we want.

I am not an economist so I do not pretend to understand market forces, but my thoughts are that this thing is going to take a long time to normalize, and I mean a long time, like several years and the new normal will not be the pre-Sandyhook normal. Oh, do not get me wrong, at some piont the bubble will burst but it will not come back down to what we are used to. People who paid $1500 for a base model sportical are not going to all of a sudden sell it for $500. Not to mention that those who bought ARs out of fear may find that they like them. I think our market has been permemantly altered.

I don't know - it would appear that the demand for $1500 sporticals (and $50 PMAGs) is dying out. I've seen several listed (and relisted and relisted and relisted) on Armslist now for a few weeks. The price keeps dropping with each relist. There are still some of the optimistic guys looking to get $2500 for theirs though...(or $1200 for their mini 14  )

You're correct that we probably won't see prices dip back down to the $500 level again...but I think its normalizing out. Of course now that Feinstein has finally introduced her bill, there will be another frenzy...

It'll be interesting to see what the MWCA line to get in looks like this Saturday in Saint Paul.
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

I talked to a client of mine yesterday in central WI. He tried to attend a local gun show this last weekend that he has attended for years. It was so busy that they exceeded the capacity of the venue, and he had to wait in line 2 hours just to get in (they would let one in when one left). By the time he got in the place was basically cleaned out.

Not saying it will not subside over time but i think as long as the liars in DC are talkng about guns this will continue and I do not think it will ever get back down to previous levels again. Just like I do not think we will ever see $1 gas again (even if it is adjusted for inflation). Like I said, I am not an expert in this area but whenever there is a run on something it seems like some of that artificial inflation never leaves it. Food at the grocery store is a good example. Many times there is a bad crop or shortage on a particular item, prices spike and then normalize and then drift back down but you never see that item on sale again for 99 cents. Just saying. I hope I am wrong.

I expect to see price lines look a bit like a set of stairs. They'll level off, then drop a bit, and with every little drop, someone new will start buying and another level-off will occur, and the process will repeat until - depending on items-we are halfway from where we are to where we were 6 mos passed. But even with current orders being a year out for some stuff, nothing will happen soon or quickly.

And this assumes no variables entering- another big shooting, weird legislation, etc.

Well, as noted in a previous post... I just bought:

6 10-round mags for my Ruger Mark III 22/45
6 13-round mags for my XDm .45ACP
2,000 rounds .45ACP ball ammo for target practice
40 rounds JHP .45ACP
5,250 rounds .22LR (on back-order)

What will I buy after the storm?

More .45ACP ammo. My goal is as much as I can get.
More .22LR ammo. My goal is 100,000 rounds and I'm 1/4th of the way there now.
Even though I don't have one right now.... an AR-15 and/or PMAGS and .223 ammo for either use or resale at the next price swell.
More training for holster work, CQC, etc.

Next on my hit list is an XDs .45ACP with 2 7-round mags and also a Ruger 10/22.

Oh, I don't think it will go entirely back to "old prices".

Just like we never got back down to pre-2k8 levels.

But it will drop quite a bit compared to where it is. And while the hoarders may not sell their $1500 sporticals for $500, they may be forced to sell at some point to pay off the credit card debt they accumulated in a panic.

In the meantime, prices will decrease on guns as the demand dries up.

That's my theory anyway.

Hate to tell you LT, but BCG's were in short supply before the panic buying started.

I think they're all lost somewhere in the sub-ether along with my Nosler bullet order.
I will never apologize for being an American.
