I have a Ruger SR22. It is an inexpensive gun and is pretty accurate. I have only shot the bulk federal thru it. I have probably shot around 700 rounds thru it and have not had any issues with it. The gun itself and extra mags are hard to find though. Good luck in your search.

I'm not a pistol guy and a Ruger III owner.

Please explain the modifications, and why.

I did modify a Mark II Volquartsen rubber target grip to fit mine, like the feel with my big hand, but getting the magazine out is a pain - it won't fall out when released, needs a push from top.

You'd like the mod then if your mag doesn't come out freely, it'll drop out with the mod. You also don't have to play around with pulling the trigger to move the hammer when re-assembling it which is nice.
Some say the trigger is smoother with it out as everything runs on a precision bushing but I don't really notice a difference.
The load chamber indicator is worthless IMO and I've 'heard' if you ever had FTF issues that may help.

I have the Ruger SR22 and like it. It will shoot any ammo I put through it.

I have a buckmark camper, inexpensive but reliable as hell. I just shoot the federal bulk you can get anywhere and the pistol does great on it. A bit easier to clean than the Ruger in my opinion.

You can't go wrong with any kind of a Buckmark, or Ruger Mark II or Mark III.
I own both and both are spot on at 25 yds, and will shoot anything that you put into it.
My experiences with the .22 1911's are that they aren't nearly as accurate or made as well as the Buckmark or Rugers.
I own several Sig P220s and P226s and love them. However, the Sig Mosquito, and I have shot many, are well below Sig quality as far as I'm concerned. I had a chance to buy one for next to nothing from one of my shooters several years ago, and passed on it.
I also have owned for many years the S&W model 617 Revolver which has been called the finest .22 revolver ever made, and I will agree with that, but the price is around $850.00
The Model 41 is top of the line and very expensive but the best. I have shot many, but shoot my modified Mark II Target Competition as well as the '41.
S&W also makes a .22 semi auto that is in the $250.00 range that some of my shooters use, and believe me, this gun functions and shoots as well as a much more expensive guns. I can't remember the model number, but if funds are a problem, I would jump all over this one.
Hope this helps,
