I figured I would pop in and give my $0.02 on the matter. Being someone who sells firearms at one of these major retail stores I feel like I may be able to provide some slight insight on the topic. Basically if your trying to purchase .22LR, 9mm, 5.56 or 223 good luck, your best bet is to get some insight on what day the trucks roll in and just camp in the parking lot till you see the truck pull up (Employees don't know what time the truck is coming or whats on it). One of the major reasons my store still receives ammo and AR's is because the company orders a set amount for each week of everything way way in advance to cover the needs the customers have at that time. So these orders are already in the manufacturers books. When a shortage happens the company calls the manufacturer to try to place another bigger order for that week, the problem is these companies have so many orders that they simply tell the store, "We can get your order in for 8 months from now." So it makes it impossible to get more than what you already have on order for those weeks.
I was the guy sitting thinking this shortage will blow over in a month or two. Then I learned from trying to order firearms and ammo to fill stock how long the wait period is for new orders from the major manufacturers. If you don't have enough reloading components to last you the next 9 months get them now, even if you have to pay extra. And if you need factory ammo in one of the calibers I listed find a store, find out when the trucks come in, and camp I guarantee you will get your hands on at least enough to get some shooting in with your firearm (be considerate to your fellow shooters and only take what you honestly need).
Oh one last thing to end this probably long winded, going to be avoided rant

. don't be that guy who buys all the .223 ammo in the store and stands in the parking lot selling that ammo at a $10.00 markup. Next time I'm gonna get a picture of the guy who does that and post it up here so you all know one good reason why no one can have a day of fun at the range with their AR. Working at a store with no limit to the amount of ammo you can buy it seems to me that certain people see this as an opening to take advantage of it.
