200gr .45 USPSA major power load needed

Postby Lights on Mon May 06, 2013 8:29 pm

I have decided to shoot single stack this year and need a load to make major power factor. I like to shoot 200gr cast bullets in my RIA 1911. My plinking loads so far have been 200gr cast SWC's and 200gr Bayou lead RN bullets with 5.4gr of Unique. I do not know what they chrony at but probably way to slow. My modern reloaders manual from Lee has 5.4gr as a max load. My Hornady manual has 7.2 gr as a max. I think the Richard Lee manual is a bit off. I also have 1 lb W231 to load with but have not tried it yet. I would like to stay with the Unique because I have like 5lbs of it and use it on my production class 9mm also. Do any of you have a good major PF load for your 1911 that uses 200gr cast bullets and Unique?

Thanks,
Mark

I too have moved to single stack after two years of shooting open, and looking at loads or USPSA. from what ive read on the Brian Enos forum (lots of good info there) the main powder seems to be hodgdon clays (plain, NOT universal or international) with a 200 gr or 230 gr bullet and somewhere around a 4 gr charge but obviously work up to it cause it is a quick powder and you don't need much. youll probably find that the faster powder and heavier bullet will shoot a lot nicer too. I tried unique a while back when I started USPSA in single stack. didn't like it much. cant recall the data either. good luck and maybe get your hands on a pound of clays just to try?

I used to run 4.7gr Titegroup under a 200gr LSWC!

I have used 4.2 gr of Clays for 200 gr SWC to make major for years out of multiple different guns. Solo 1000 and V320 are other popular options as well. The V320 loads start at 4.7gr and go to 5.1gr for a 200 gr LSWC.

good luck finding powder....

I Used 4.2-4.3 gr. Clays and 200 LSWC for IDPA for years. 4 gr. Clays will work for the 230 LRN

Guys thanks for the info on your loads. But I already have tons of Unique. I do not want to change powder considering how hard it is to find right now.

sounds like ya gotta get out the chrono, get a starting load, and keep increasing till you hit 170 PF if you insist on keeping unique. if you like the way it shoots, yay, if you don't, then change something if you want it to be better.
