Stiff springs?

Postby Ski_Doctor on Tue Oct 01, 2013 12:40 pm

No, I'm not talking about my undercarriage but rather my somewhat new G19. I was working up several test loads for 9mm using AA#5 and Power Pistol using REM 115gr FMJ (hollow base) and random brass, and noticed that almost all of the lighter loads below mid-range in the books wouldn't cycle properly on my G19 (FTE), but most behaved fine in my PPS. In some cases the brass barely spat out of the chamber and landed only a foot or two away.

Does the G19 need a hotter load to cycle properly or is it a case or spring break in? I only have about 250 rnds through the G19 so it's a spring chicken compared to 2,000+ through the PPS. When I started testing from the mid to upper end of the powder ranges it cycled fine and spit the brass out several feet as expected. All loads were within mfg spec for each powder type starting at the low end and working up to near max (not over) and didn't see any over pressure signs at the top end.

Just curious if other G19 owners have experienced similar things or can recommend their formula for either powder and load?

Is the 19 a 4th or 3rd gen? With the new recoil spring I could imagine a hotter load being necessary, but if it is still a 3rd gen you may want a few hot loads through it to break in. Also, have you had any issues with factory ammo?

Thanks Lumberzach

Gen4 and no issues with factory ammo. It just doesn't seem to like light loads which is interesting because most glock owners say they'll eat just about anything.

I have never rolled my own, but I did buy some MBI reloads from lucky gunner. They claim that it is loaded to "standard" pressures and I only had 1 FTE on round 100 of the 600 MBI I cycled through it. Interestingly, that is the only malfunction I have EVER had with EITHER of my Glocks (Gen4 19 and Gen4 34). I am pretty sure I limp wristed it too. The picture is my avatar because it is such an unusual sight. The spring does loosen up after you put a few thousand down range.

If you like the light loads just change out the recoil spring. They cost like $7 and can be changed in a minute. My XDm 5.25 .40 would never run my powder puff loads with the factory 16lb spring, but with a 13lb spring it runs like magic and has less recoil than most factory 9mm rounds.

Where did you find gen4 recoil springs for $7?

Okay, I'm not a Glock guy so I wasn't thinking about the captive recoil spring deal on the gen 4's. I don't know what's involved in changing them or if you can convert it to a one-piece guide rod. But here's a $7 Glock recoil spring for ya.

Another option would be to just trade the Glock in for an XDm. Then you can use $7 recoil springs without changing out any other parts :P

You could use a Gen. 4 conversion recoil spring insert for your Gen. 4 Glock. Then you could use a Gen. 3 recoil spring. It would give you more spring weight options. The insert sells for $ 10.

So Springfield improved from XD to XDM by going from a double to single spring system, while Glock improved from Gen3 to Gen4 by doing the complete opposite? ;)
Did you just buy that beautiful firearm, or are you trying to sell that piece of crap?
