S&W M&P 9 full size is $489.99 at FF through Oct 26th.

S&W M&P 40 compact with 3 mags (307303) BNIB can be had for $399.95 on the interlink. Buy the factory 9c barrel and 9mm mags and you have two guns in one. Buy the factory 357 barrel and you have 3 guns in one.

All good advice but be aware of the fact that .22 ammunition is in short supply.

I'm assuming you meant to say you'll be applying for your PTP on Tuesday. The top cop has 7 days to approve or deny. Unfortunately, there are no repercussions for dragging the decision/notification out, so be prepared to wait until AT LEAST the 29th before you hear a yea or nay from the city.

Anoka County has been pretty quick, he'll probably have it before the end of the week if he gets his paperwork in Tuesday.

Then there's always the fine print. Brooklyn Park apparently wanted a few extra days so they only "accept" applications on Tuesdays, thus if you turn it in Wednesday they don't consider the 7 days started until the following Tuesday. However I think I turned mine in on a Thursday and had it the following Monday so they don't always stick to that.

I'll second checking out Capra's. Bought my XDS 9mm and a Citori there this year. Good guys and they have good prices.

As for a 22LR to start, I got a Beretta Neos. Inexpensive and fun to shoot, highly recommend checking it out if you are looking at 22LR.

For an option for used guns, check out http://www.cdnninvestments.com. They had M&P turn ins a little while back at what looked to be a fair price. Add in shipping and transfer fee to see if they are still reasonable. I've bought a few guns and other items from them and have been very satisfied.

.. so is 9mm, I'm sure if he needs some .22 to get started either the shop he purchases the pistol at or another forum member in the same geographic area can help him out.

Unrelated note - I see one of our own (who I've had the pleasure of doing business with) has a sale going on M&P's in 9mm right now:

You can buy a glock 19 now or later, but you will be much happier later if you buy one now.

I'll second this. I prefer my XD9 to my M&P 9 pro. I think the lack of tactile feedback on the trigger reset it what bothers me the most. Try them both out and see which one works for you.

The newer manufacture M&P 9s and 40s have the Shield-like reset. I bought my full-size 9 in the spring and the reset is very positive. It's a little springy, actually (pardon the pun).

I can't comment as my M&P pro has Apex parts and the RAM but I like the gun better than the XD or Glock. That's largely subjective though. From the 3, go to bills, rent them, see which one you like.

Glocks are dead simple though.

I just learned that a couple days ago. I don't plan on buying a .22 right now so I'm not worried. Thanks for the heads up though!

Yes that's exactly what I meant. Turning in the paperwork is one step closer and that's what I intend to be doing. I expect to wait a while. Remember we're both in MN and we've dealt with the MN DMV several times I'm guessing. Everyone knows this state is typically not quick about paperwork, unless you owe them money then we can expect same day mailings!

I think I'll head in there tomorrow after I swing by the Blaine PD. I'm interested in viewing as many gun shops as possible while waiting for my PTP. Thanks for the opinion!

Is it like a crashedtoys.com or a salvage place essentially, without the salvage of course? Reposessed guns possibly? I'm checking them out now!

I've put a couple hundred rounds through a glock and I loved the gun. I am not experienced enough right now to say if it's exactly what I want or not, however I really liked the SW.. I'll put it on my things to buy list! :)

I'll try to fire both guns if possible before I buy one!

I've heard that tactile feedback is seriously lacking. But I've also heard opinions on both sides. It'll come down to which gun I like the best I suppose.

I believe the 357 SIG uses the same mags as the .40.

I checked out Capras today. Great staff, but the selection was a bit limited. I'll keep popping back in there to see if they add more guns down the road. After that I stopped in Gander Mountain and was there for over an hour. The guy helping me was so knowledgable. Their prices are excellent as well, they also said they price match to anyone within a 60 mile radius. So that's pretty cool. I'm stuck between an XD9 and an M&P9.. Or either of those guns in a .40 as well.
