The devil you know is always better than the devil you don't know. Unfortunately I don't see this as a chance for the RFL to gain a seat. St. Paul never elects Republicans.

Immediately raises two questions:
( and I didn't read into the link)
What WILL he be doing(running for)?

Who's the anointed water carrier set up to displace him?

ETA:
Interestingly, neither he nor the reporter mention gun control in the accolades of his dealings with "criminal justice issues,"

Paymar will not seek re-election in Minnesota House - TwinCities.com

…..Paymar, the chairman of the House Public Safety Committee, has been a legislative leader on criminal justice issues, passing bills on preventing domestic and sexual assault, confronting sexual exploitation of children and sex trafficking.

"I've always believed that we needed to be smart as well as tough on fighting crime, which is why I've been an ardent supporter of drug courts, re-entry programs for offenders leaving prison so they can successfully reintegrate into society, drug and sex-offender treatment and youth intervention programs," he said……..

And just like that, a candidate for Paymar's mnleg seat stops up. Melanie McMahon, who serves on local neighborhood boards running as Dem

I always thought pocket gopher like, weasels have some positive attributes, they eat rodents and are fun to watch on the deer stand.

I don't believe it, if true - he's got something up his sleeve that could be even more destructive.

Normally, I would say you are correct. HOWEVER, we don't have to elect a Republican to his seat, all we have to do is elect a pro-2A candidate to his seat. Additionally, his retirement vacates the chair position. There is a good chance that the next chairman, be they a Republican or a Democrat, will be pro-2A.

That said, he'll still be the chairman of the House Public Safety Committee in 2014, so he'll be a thorn in our side for another six months.

Either way, even if his replacement is worse than he is, they won't hold a committee chair for at least 2 terms.

It seems that all of these liberals go to work for non profits when they leave elected office. Why is that??

And ex-LT, try finding a pro 2nd Amendment dem in St. Paul.

We knew Mao Tse Paymar was retiring last winter ... it was his Feinstein-esque last hurray .....
I will say Paymar was at least cordial in the hearing last year ... something SEN. Ronnie Latz and his groovy ghoulies must certainly were not.
My wife went to religious school w/ Sen latz .... she disliked his arrogant self righteousness back then ................

From the Senate Hearings last session:

The scene of Joe Olson holding back Andrew Rothmam as if he were a bulldog on a choke chain was pricless.
