I presume that no one wondering about the legalities of use of deadly force in this thread have a permit to carry. If you did, your instructor would have covered the statutes and case law that answer those questions. Even if you don't carry a gun in public, if you own one for self defense I would highly recommend taking a carry class from a competent instructor, if for no other reason to learn the law with regards to the use of deadly force.
There are so many presumptions, errors, and total nonsense in this thread it's scary. If you don't know what the law actually is, where the gray areas are, and how they apply, please get some training.

Reading this book twice taught me more than my PTC class. Many classes use and distribute this book. More should. I probably flip through and refresh my memory on certain sections annually.
