I believe it's just company policies designed to limit the opportunity for theft of guns by the shipper's employees.

Taurus has a great warranty, so many people take advantage of it ... count on about a month.

That's a very generous offer. Who pays the shipping when you send a Taurus, or any other gun, back for repairs?

You pay outgoing 2nd Day Air shipping.. normally 20-25 bucks. Taurus pays for the return.

UPS & FedEx have always said it's their policy for next day air. May be a policy for individuals and something else for dealers.
But it's a law that you inform them about the firearm in the box.

Well, kinda. I have shipped several guns by ground in the past, but then I may be a few years older than some here. I think it was UPS that created the over night policy first after they actually did have some issues with employees stealing packages. FedEx was close behind to do the same thing.

As I understand, overnight limits the time the package could possibly be unattended and ripe for plucking by a thief

I should have said always in the last year or so that I've shipped. And I believe you're right about the theft thing.

the next day air thing is a pain in the butt but there is a loophole, I have always used 2nd day ground and never had an issue, it is not a felony if you dont inform the shipper. check out the rule below. also as a mere mortal i have always found it entertaining to put something humorous on a shipping certificate, you know instead of "scary babyand women killing gun", I have put down " pressure activated rotary precision paper punch" or something of the like, actually when i returned a gun to S&W a few years back i recall contacting them to check on the status of the repair and the guy on the phone remembered my label and shared a good laugh about it.

No common or contract carrier shall require or cause any label, tag, or other written notice to be placed on the outside of any package, luggage, or other container that such package, luggage, or other container contains a firearm.

But I think if the gun is lost or damage, no insurance claim will be paid. Not sure, but was told this by someone I know at FedEx.
